California Typewriter, 2016 – ★★★★★
I’m predisposed to love anything at all related to typewriters, but California Typewriter was about more than that. It was about art, and how our interaction with simple machines affects the way we create.
There’s a Digital Media Crash. But No One Will Say It – TPM
there is basically no publisher in existence involved in any sort of news or political news coverage who says to themselves, my readers are demanding more of their news on video as opposed to text. Not a single one. The move to video is driven entirely by advertiser demand.
Count me among the readers not clamoring for more video. I’d like zero video if that’s ok.
What is a computer? – BirchTree
You don’t take a picture on you’re phone and then say “I can’t wait to get home so I can download and edit this before I share it with my friends.”
Madness or not, that’s exactly what I do. I may not always do it that way, but until I no longer shoot using film and “real” digital cameras in addition to the iPhone, my computer is my iMac and is where I edit and share my photos.
Datasette is an app that you run from the command line. You just point it to a SQLite database and run datasette mydb.db. And what it does is set up a simple, secure, publicly-available read-only web application for exploring that data. That’s basically it. It takes database files and makes them really easy to explore on the Web
I agree completely with Paul’s take. Datasette feels like a simple idea that will end up being an important one.
